Chattooga County has four incorporated places in it and about twenty-five thousand people, and most of those people do not live inside any of the four. It runs from the Floyd County line north toward Walker, and its western edge is where Georgia stops and Alabama starts. Summerville is the county seat. The rest of the county, the part that is inside no city at all, is the reason this page exists.
Four towns, and the county that is mostly neither
Chattooga County has exactly four incorporated places: Summerville, which is the county seat and the largest, Trion, which is the second largest, and then Menlo and Lyerly, both a good deal smaller. Add all four together at the 2020 count and they still hold under a third of the county's people. Everyone else lives at an address with no city limits around it, out at Berryton, Gore, Holland, Subligna, Teloga and the rest of the scattered communities that fill in the map. In a lot of counties the unincorporated address is the exception. Here it is the normal one, and that changes what a call from Chattooga County usually looks like before anyone says a word about wiring.
US 27 is the spine of all of it. The same road that leaves Rome to the southeast arrives in Summerville, carries on about five miles north to Trion, and then keeps going out of the county toward LaFayette, over the line in Walker County. Lyerly sits south of Summerville on Georgia 114, off the main line. If you are trying to work out where you fall, the highway is a better guide than the county outline: this county is long, and the towns on it are strung out rather than clustered.
The western boundary is worth saying out loud, because it is a real limit and not a technicality. Cherokee County and DeKalb County, Alabama, sit directly across it, and a Georgia license does not reach them, so that is where the map ends, however short the distance looks from a driveway on the Georgia side. The county is also big, a little over three hundred square miles, and the far northwest corner up against the state line is a genuinely different proposition from the middle of it. Nobody should assume that corner either way. Call, say where the house is, and you will hear honestly whether it works.
What the Rome base means for Chattooga County
Chattooga County shares a border with Floyd County, and Floyd County is where Journey Electric is based. That is the whole reason this county reads as ordinary working area rather than as a stretch: it is the next county over on a road that starts in Rome. What that does not do is flatten the county out. Summerville and the ground along the highway are the straightforward part. The corners, especially the northwest one, are where a phone call earns its keep.
