Aragon is a small city with a large address, and the gap between the two is the first useful thing to know about working here. The city covers 1.09 square miles, a little under seven hundred acres, and every foot of it sits in Polk County, with 1,440 people counted inside the line in 2020. The Census Bureau's tabulation area for the 30104 ZIP, its approximation of what the post office actually delivers, covers about thirty-four square miles. That is roughly thirty-one times as much ground, it holds no other incorporated place at all, and it reaches into Bartow County and Floyd County as well as Polk. So most people whose mail says Aragon do not live in the city, and some of them are not even in the same county as it. The town is older than its own government, with a post office here from 1899 and a mill running from 1900 while the city itself was not chartered until 1914, and the two maps have never lined up since. For an electrician all of that comes to one practical point. Which government has a say in a job in Aragon depends on the lot, not on the envelope.

Two of these describe the same town measured two different ways. One is the ground the city government actually covers. The other is the much larger ground the post office puts that name on. The third note is what Aragon was built around, which is not there any more, and the water beside it, which is.

Inside the city line
The City of Aragon is 1.09 square miles of land and all of it is in Polk County. For scale, Cedartown covers more than eight times that ground and Rockmart nearly five times. What sits on the small end of that comparison is still a working city rather than a name on a sign: a mayor and four council members, a police department, a municipal court, a public works crew, and a city hall out on Rome Highway. The line around it is enforced too, in ways anybody can check. The city's own solid waste agreement makes municipal collection the only collection allowed inside the limits and says so in as many words. That is worth knowing before a job that carries a permit and an inspection, because a lot inside the line and a lot one street outside it are two different answers to the question of who signs off, and the difference is not visible from the road.

The Census Bureau publishes a tabulation area for each ZIP, an approximation of the ground a post office serves, and the one for 30104 runs to about thirty-four square miles. Aragon is the only incorporated place anywhere inside it. Everything else is unincorporated, and it does not all stay in one county: the 30104 area crosses into Bartow County and Floyd County as well as Polk, so an Aragon envelope is not a statement about which courthouse an address answers to. The mismatch runs the other way as well. Part of the incorporated city falls inside the tabulation area for 30153, which is Rockmart's ZIP, so there is ground that is legally in Aragon and gets its mail as Rockmart. The mill pond, and what became of the mill
Aragon exists because of a cotton mill built in 1898 by a firm out of New York Mills, New York, and bought by A. D. Juilliard and Company in 1900. By 1929 the city was calling itself an Industrial Utopia on the strength of it. The plant ran until 1970, and what happened afterward is the part that separates this town from the mill villages on either side of it. The building went through four more owners across the next three decades, the last of them making pillows and wooden pallets, and then fire destroyed the complex on 6 August 2002. Lindale's plant is still standing and still in use. Aragon's is not there at all, so there is no surviving industrial shell here to convert and nothing in town inherits a plant's electrical service. What kept the name is the water. The Aragon Mill Pond is city recreation ground now, along with Veterans Memorial Park and two ball fields, and Pittman Field out on New Prospect Road hosts a barbecue that reached its fifty-first year in 2026. One detail off the city's own vendor sheet says something about the place: a booth with electricity costs twice what a booth without one costs.

What a Rome base means for Aragon

Aragon is 15.8 miles from the Rome base. There is a stranger version of the same distance worth mentioning. Because the 30104 area reaches up into Floyd County, part of what the post office calls Aragon shares a county with the base this business works from, which is not something that can be said of anywhere else on this map. Practically, the short answer is that an Aragon call is ordinary near territory and the drive is not the interesting part. The conversation is. Give us the physical address rather than the mailing one, and say whether you know which side of the city line the lot sits on. If you do not know, that is normal here and not a problem, because it is a question we can answer faster than you can, and answering it early is what keeps a permit from turning up as a surprise in the middle of a panel change.

The city is, entirely. Every foot of the 1.09 square miles inside Aragon's limits sits in Polk County. The address is a different question. Why is the town called Aragon?

There are two published accounts and we are not going to pretend one of them is settled. The standard explanation is that the name comes from local deposits of aragonite, a mineral found in the ground here. The Polk County Historical Society's own history says instead that the name came from a well-known New York hotel, which sounds far-fetched right up until you learn that the mill the town grew around was built in 1898 by a firm out of New York Mills, New York. What is not in dispute is the sequence, and the sequence is the part that matters to us. There was a post office here in 1899 and a mill running in 1900, and the city was not incorporated until 1914, so Aragon was a working place for about fifteen years before any government drew a line around part of it. That head start is why the city limits and the mailing address have never agreed since.
